“CHILDREN as young as 12 should be taught about sex in school, it was claimed last night, after a Welsh county was shown to have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in the UK.
Figures released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics showed Merthyr Tydfil had 73.5 pregnancies per 1,000 teenagers aged 15-17 in 2008, up from 69.5 in 2007 and 56.9 in 2006.
It is the highest rate of teenage pregnancies seen in any Welsh local authority since 2002 and put Merthyr, an area with a population of 30,000, ahead of Manchester and Lewisham in south-east London.
In Wales, Rhondda had the next-highest rate of teenage pregnancies, with 59.2 per 1,000 girls.”
